The work of art is the result of the artist's imagination.
Antoni Dura presents contemporary still lifes that strategically combine elements of daily urban environments: cups, plates, cans and tubes of paint, brushes, and chairs, all masterfully represented in a quasi-hyperrealist way. Dura “suspends” the items in a neutral and timeless space, very often equipped with a strong chromaticism analogous to that used in American Pop Art.
Harmonizing a precision in his drawings and forms, Dura contrasts light against the elements to imbue them with three-dimensionality, and further heightens the effect with the colorist expressiveness in their backgrounds. The paintings transcend the mere contemplation of the artist’s work and elicit dialogue and interpretation unique to each viewer. The essence of modern art is displayed in these unique still lifes.
Artist Statement
The work of art is the result of the artist's imagination. That is evident. In my case it is the painting in all its manifestations: acrylics, pigments, waxes, oils, pencils ... that have been my faithful traveling companions throughout my life. It’s time that they deserved recognition as they are the protagonists of the work.
In my paintings I want to go further and capture the intricacy of artistic studies. I have found that all of us artists who work in two-dimensional art have similar worktables and tools and yet our finished results are very different. We all have that essential manual ability to express ourselves, but a totally different mental concept and that is the greatness of art. There are so many forms of expression, so many different styles, as there are artists in the world.
Antoni Durà held his first solo art exhibition in 1973. Since then he has exhibited his paintings in major Spanish cities as well as in France, Germany and Italy. As well as being a figurative painter he is a Professor of Art.
He acted as cultural adviser and Director of the Office of Cultural Policy of the City of Gandia, Valencia.
Passionate about culture and a lover of his native city, he founded and directed the Popular University of Gandia – an institution created to promote education – and was the creator of established events such as the ‘Cine Pot’ dedicated to screening historical and popular film.
